God Is Immutable

According to the dictionary, immutable means unchangeable, invariable, unalterable, or permanent. It doesn't mean that God is stubborn or that he's like a brick wall. It doesn't mean he's a martinet incapable of any viewpoint except his own. We tend to use human connotations to explain God and it doesn't work.

God is immutable. In what ways do we know this?

  1. His characteristics never change; he's never more just than he is merciful, for example.
  2. His love is constant and life giving; his love doesn't fluctuate. It's permanent, unchanging. And isn't that a consolation!
  3. He's faithful because he's immutable.
  4. His plan never changes. His plan is for our salvation; nothing deters him from that.
  5. Because of his immutability, he becomes our rock, our standard. We can cling to him as to a rock. We can bang our heads against him and he won't change, thank goodness!
  6. He doesn't change his mind; his will is always being carried out. He uses the many circumstances of our lives to effect his will.
  7. Sin doesn't deter him.
  8. Because he doesn't change, I can have confidence in what happens in my life. All things that happen in my life are his providence for me. I don't always see it but I do believe it.
  9. His immutability provides stability. "Nothing can separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus."
